The Effect of Advertisements Upon Self-Esteem

Through the readings and discussions given in class during my Spring 2014 Imagery and Culture course, I have developed an interest in the self-esteem of men and women in today’s society. More specifically, I have gained interest in the role that advertisements play on these men and women and whether or not it affects them in any way. This caused me to do my final project on this topic, sampling random people (between the ages of 18-25) and asking them two simple questions:

On a scale of 1-10, how comfortable are you with your body?
Do you think that any billboard advertisements (i.e. Victoria’s Secret models, women on the front covers of magazines, Abdercrombie/Hollister models, etc.) have any effect on why you feel that way? Why or why not?

The goal is to find out if the statistics about how people feel about their body are true through conducting short interviews and asking them questions about their personal self-esteem.
